Serums are hygroscopic, porous amorphous mass of pinkish-yellow or white color.

Serums contain specific agglutins for superficial (K) and somatic (O) antigens of Escherichia, which, upon interaction with the corresponding microorganisms, cause their agglutination.

Polyvalent serums agglutinate in the agglutination reaction on glass without dilution by at least 3 crosses for 3 minutes. Cultures of Escherichia of those homologous OK-groups, antibodies to which contain drugs.

 Formulation of the reaction of agglutination on glass. The drug after opening the ampoule is dissolved in 1 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The culture grown in test tubes on scooped meat-peptone agar at a temperature of (37 ± 1) ° C for 18-20 hours, is removed from the surface of the agar near the condensate by a loop, applied to a slide near the drop of serum and gradually starting from the edge drops, triturate in it.

In the presence of agglutins, flocculent agglutinate appears in the drop of serum to the strain under study. In the control drop (suspension of culture in 0.9% solution of sodium chloride) there should be no agglutination.
