The Endo medium is used to isolate and differentiate enterobacteria on the ability to ferment lactose. The Agar Endo action mechanism is based on the ability of fuchsins to form a colorless complex with sulfite. Bacteria that grow on the Endo medium are divided into two groups. Those bacteria that do not ferment lactose, grow in the form of colorless colonies. Lactose-fermenting bacteria form aldehydes. In turn, aldehydes bind sulfite and release fuchsin, which gives the colonies a red color, sometimes with a metallic shine.
Agar Endo is not sterilized before use. Sowing is carried out by a superficial method, cultivation is carried out at 37 ° С, the result is estimated 18-24 hours.
Destination of Enduro Agar: Differentiation of bacteria by the ability to ferment lactose
The principle of Agar Endo: Bacteria. which do not ferment lactose, grow in the form of colorless colonies. In the medium there is a complex of fuchsin-sulfite, which is colorless. Bacteria that ferment lactose form aldehydes. In turn, the aldehydes bind to sulfite and release the fuchsin. As a result, colonies are painted in pink, sometimes metallic shine, color.
